Rain induced maintenance

Hello everyone !

So, how’s it going in the RC scene ? ;) Here at Team Vebra we’re trying to make the most of these new rainy days to catch up with some needed maintenance.

The T3R has had:

  • New set of tyres fitted – 34 shore – Kindly obtained by a fellow driver at the track and for a bargain price. Thank you again!
  • The rear gear-diff has been stripped, cleaned and fitted with 1000 oil, a new silicone ring has been fitted and will hopefully keep it “oil-proof” from now on.
  • The rear suspension arms have also had their lower ball-joints replaced (xray original replacement parts bought from http://www.jmt-rc-shop.lu/)
  • The two worn out ball-joints have been improvised as lipo battery backstops to keep the battery pack from sliding inwards towards the front-belt (underneath the top-deck. A surprisingly good fit!

The next opportunity with a dry and clean track will hopefully yield some good track times. Although, all things considered, we’re pretty pleased with the recent lap times. 26 laps with an average speed of under 24seconds.

Strangely enough, the best lap has not been beaten since April 27th (21.871seconds)

See you at the track everyone and thanks for reading us, as usual.

Latest Best Lap with the Tamiya TL01

Hello All,

Ahead of this weekend’s first round of Championship (at LMCC.lu) we just have a quick and selfish post about our latest Best Lap with our 15year old Tamiya TL-01.

Screen Shot 2014-05-09 at 11.05.44 PM

Under 24 seconds is not a record we thought we’d manage but it’s there and we’d like to think we could even improve it somewhat !

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend (we’re not, of course!) See you there for a beer and a hotdog or two ! (fingers crossed it won’t rain too much)

Another New Best Lap – We’re under 22 (+11)

Good afternoon RC Fans!

First of all,  a Big Thank You to all those who went to help clean up the LMCC Track this weekend. Alas, the Team Vebra members were caught up in other activities and only, cheekily, took advantage of the results late on Sunday afternoon (about 2 hour ago)

With the new track conditions the grip was improved considerably and our New Best Lap is now, finally, under 22 seconds :)

Best of Laps - 27 4 2014

This lap of 21.871 was the second of two laps under 22 so we want to think there is some consistency building up and not just pure luck.

Some minor mods are still required and some new parts will need to be sought … wish us luck ! :)

Thanks for reading us, as usual, if you do :)

M18 on track, quite surprising…

Today Team Vebra challenged the rain and went to the LMCC track for a quick spin. The “practice session” actually lasted much more than expected, we were lucky, it didn’t rain, despite the forecast.

We only had three batteries fully charged, didn’t have much time since yesterday’s session to recharge them all, so we focused on what we actually wanted to test.

But the first to step tyre on the track was our brand new M18. As a reminder, for people that might not now what a M18 is, this model name identifies a 1/18 scale car made by XRay. The little sister of one of their 1/10 cars, like the T3, T3R or T4. Although they have pretty nothing in common, this is the way I like to see it.

Our M18, as previously posted, is all stock. Brushed 180 motor, ESC and Nimh battery. Yet, putting it on the track gave us some little, tiny pleasant surprises.

We weren’t surprised though by the lack of punch. Blame it on the stock brushed motor, the Nimh battery, or both, the M18 drove like an “half-charged-battery 23T bushed motor”, or even less. Yet, the car is pleasant to drive. Why? The handling. By driving this little wee car you realise that XRay packed their knowledge in a very small sized car. The car feels stable, balanced, well designed. Not one of those cars you fear that by putting a more powerful motor, the car’s gonna fly, literally.

As also previously posted, we’re waiting on some upgrades for this little 4WD car. Replacement ESC and motor, of course the lipo too. Once this upgrades will be in, I’m pretty sure the M18 will show us it’s full potential. If not to conquer the 1/10 world, to show how a smaller scale car can still be competitive.

Hopefully soon a video, once the upgrades are there.

Take care,

Ka.

Team Vebra combusts … well, almost!

Hello All from this very sunny July ! ;)

DSC_0013

The Team went to the track again today. Let’s just say that the pre-track-homework could have been better. The M03s were willing to do their best but their tyres were really rather tired and grip was a real issue.  The spare Shimizu were comfortably sitting at home. The remote control batteries went flat and we could only change 2 out of 4. (they lasted long enough) and… more importantly… our borrowed Kyosho 1/10 combustion engine was not quite RACE-READY… The list of reasons is probably too long for this post; what matters is that it DID start and it did go WROOM WROOM WROOM … As upcoming youtube videos will testify.

Some issues in uploading the pics today so the others will follow later.

bank track – May 9th 2013

Hello everybody, yes, we’re back !

DSC_0035DSC_0039DSC_0040 DSC_0045

This May bank holiday has given us a sunny morning (just about) and the chance to dust off our M03s for a quick spin .

Very pleased with both cars’ performance once the tyres had a chance to warm up (and get rid of the sand/dust that they’d gathered during winter)

No Lap times this ‘time’ but more to come as the weather hopefully keeps improving.

god speed

SunShine – Day 3 (really?)

Well, what a glorious third day of sunshine we’ve had today again. The LMCC track was dry, hot and pretty empty !

We had another few laps this morning with the ‘Old Giulia’ under the new Fiat 500 shell (M03m) She drove like a thing of beauty!

Here are some pics of the chassis in the sunshine.

It’s starting to look a little more bling with all the blue aluminium parts on it. Don’t you think? Despite the rear tyres looking pretty worn down the grip was impeccable

We did need to keep the Temp. in check though. Unsure of what a safe operating temperature would be for the Brushless; we took a break whenever the Spektrum started beeping at us.

Dial in the sunshine and grip shall be yours.

Hello All !

This sunny May weekend has proven to be an excellent opportunity to spend more time at the track. The Giulia and Minikast were both out in force… Nice dry track, LOTS of grip and hardly anyone else to share the track with (we guess people took advantage of the 3 day weekend and travelled places… well… TeamVebra took advantage of that.)

MINIKAST – Small Summary

The MiniKast is now in her “perfect” condition. It’s a brushed setup, 15T HPI Firebolt, a reliable and lightweight ESC (Viper 12R) and Lipo Power. She’s a real pleasure to drive. With a dry track and her new Shimizu (Med Front / Soft Rear) she’s probably doing her best lap times ever.

our GIULIA – ‘Medium  Summary’

Well, the Giulia has kept us busy this weekend. At first the handling was “ok”. Not great. She then started behaving in a rather funny way; whenever a small “*ock-up” would occur, she would suddenly behave as though we’d set the trim +25 Right or +25 left. So much so that even finishing the lap was difficult. After some investigation and with some input from fellow LMCC members we realised that it was the servo-saver playing tricks. Not sure how to describe this but, basically, it would lose the 0 position (after some collision) and remain at an incorrect +15 or +20 position. THE SOLUTION… as per suggestion heard at the track, we super-glued the Tamiya Servo Saver together. It’s now one big block of plastic and won’t shift around anymore. Success…. The second session with the Giulia saw some major improvements.

  • The 3Racing Shocks were fitted with the Tamiya Blue (Medium) springs. The 3racing springs are too soft.
  • The ride was raised (by a fair bit) with great results.

We were left with some understeer but we know we should expect that from this layout. Otherwise, the Shimizu and the warm track improved the grip a great deal and it proved to be a fun little M03 !

Thanks for reading us and stay tuned for more TeamVebra updates!

Rubber !

So, the other day we found out that UHU doesn’t glue tyres as we’d hoped it might.

As the first picture shows, the Shimizu tyre actually came off whilst racing. To remedy, tonight we assembled  new wheels & tyres combos. (Conveyor belt production style!)  Labeling them inside the rim so as to recognise them.

These wheels are really nice and made by 3Racing; notice how they come with a “fancy” disc-break look.

We’ll have to try out both the Giulia and the MiniKast with these new sets ! GRIP is supposed to be on the Menu :)

SideCar Tested at the LMCC

So we finally made it to the LMCC  this morning and we tried out the new “sideCar” in our mighty Giulia.

Some pretty good results considering that the track was damp in places. This is a first set of results.

We also tried out the new Shimizu Hard Compound tyres on a new set of 3Racing wheels. Seemed pretty good !

We’ve got more 3Racing gear to install, test out and report on so stay tuned for more RC news on TeamVebra!

Our Giulia Hits the LMCC (and the LMCC hits her, twice)

Hello everyone!

Today we had about 90 minutes of sunshine and of course, we took advantage of them by reaching the LMCC track with our brand new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA (AKA ‘Our Giulia’)

Just some pictures for now, no LapTimes nor particular observations can be made for the moment as, ultimately, it’s the same brushless M03s that was under the MiniCoop shell. Yes, with the same handling problems!

Pictures were taken prior to the 15 or 20 laps that we got her to do. Unfortunately, despite our best intentions we had two minor “FAILS” and, oh boy, do scratches show up well on that Mustard Yellow!

Stay tuned for more pics and info on our Giulia.

Easter Track Recap & Tuning…. (Ka500 & MiniCoop)

This Easter weekend has brought us more sunshine than expected and we took advantage of every ray with long sessions at the track. This morning, for instance, the MiniCoop set a new lap record of:

  • 29.028 seconds – Driver Astoria – Dry Track

(we mean a TeamVebra only Record, of course :) ) The track was nice and dry but cold at around 8 or 9 degrees Celsius, it always took us a couple of laps to keep the tyres in check. It proved a very pleasant and successful session with quite a few “lessons learnt”.

For instance, whilst at the track:

  • We tried 1/10 Touring Racing Slicks on the Ka500 with rather dubious results. It might have given it a slightly higher top speed but it also raised its centre of gravity and made it handle a little worse in the steep corners. More importantly, they looked too big on the M03m
  • We moved the Receiver further away from the Brushless-Esc (on the MiniCoop) as we’d noticed some strange interference (at very random times) and, once we moved it, it behaved normally again.
  • We moved the Brushless-Esc a little as well to try and have a better angle for the Motor wires. I don’t think we can say we noticed any difference but it was after that small change that we got a new PB… so perhaps it did … :)
  • Changed the settings of our Brushless Etronix Photon Esc via its very user friendly,  if a tad obscure, programming card
    • Set the ‘Start Power‘ to High (from Med)
    • Set the ‘Drag Brake‘ to Low (from Med)
    • Set the ‘Settings‘ to “manual” (having no idea of what difference this might make!)

Once back in our TeamVebra StudioLab  we also:

  • Fitted a replacement Futaba S3003 Servo on the Ka500, and re-adjusted the Turnbuckle tie-rods. As mentioned in previous posts, the steering was way off.
  • Fitted the HPI Firebolt 15T on the Ka500 instead of the Ansmann Clash15T
  • Changed the Pistons of the Aluminium  oil dampers from the 1-hole type (too slow) to the 2-hole type. We also added 3 additional O-Rings in the Piston shaft to shorten the pistons’ travel and make them more appropriate for a low M03 chassis.

  • Swapped the Right-Hand-Side tyres with the Left-Hand-Side tyres on the MiniCoop. At the moment all 4 tyres are Shimizu-Medium. We noticed that due to the fact that the track is counter-clockwise, the tyres on the right hand side (the “outside tyres” on most corners) were wearing down more rapidly than their left counterparts.

We’ve still got some work to do on the Videos that we took this morning and, very exciting, a new section of our Website should soon be up to report our Lap Times and Car’s Specs… so stay tuned to vebra.lu for more RC GEEK STUFF !

Thanks for reading us !

Brushless MiniCoop – Take 2

After last night spent in the workshop, the MiniCoop was back out on the Track this evening with some more positive results!

First of all it should be noted that the track was really rather cold and the grip wasn’t that great.

The Ka500, which also came out for a spin, was a real challenge to handle; this was also partially due to the front suspension which was set too stiff (and have been modded down since) Side note: We wonder how many people find a use for the White Tamiya Springs out of the On-Road Set

The MiniCoop, got us a new Personal Best (PB): 29.243seconds

Astoria also lapped another 29.959 and 29.942. Should be promising as hopefully with a little more heat, a little less headache and a little more sunshine we could bring that Personal Best under the 29 mark.

This Easter Weekend should hopefully provide more opportunity for Track Fun so stay tuned! As usual, thanks for reading us.
